A Journey Through English String Music
Programme to include Elgar’s Serenade for Strings, a symphony by Williams Boyce, a cello concerto by John Garth, and the world premier of Three Sketches of Mr Polly by Edward Longstaff.
The Sting Ensemble performing at this concert gathers together string players drawn from Kernow Philharmonic Orchestra, which is formed from some of the South West’s finest classical musicians.
The String Ensemble will perform a selection of works by English composers from 1751 to the present day. Often overlooked, the beauty of English string music contributed much to orchestra music by its lush string sound.
Premiered this evening is ‘Three Sketches of Mr Poll’, about which composer Edward Longstaff writes that “it is a piece where the music came before the title. The initial motivation for this work came from Laura Parfitt, who wanted to commission a new three movement work especially for the string players of Cornwall. Having written three contrasting movements, I decided to treat them as preparatory sketches for a planned opera based on ‘The History of Mr Polly’ by H.G. Wells, and subsequently used all the sketches within the opera.”
