The Gods Descend Upon Truro Arts Company, in ‘FOUR THIRTY A.M.’ a Solo Exhibition by Christian Boult

Truro Arts Company will present a solo exhibition by Newquay Open University Student Christian Boult. The exhibition entitled ‘FOUR THIRTY A.M.’, will be shown inside the main space of the art shop on River Street, from Monday 6th to Friday 10th May 2024. The collection, which marks the culmination of degree study, is presented in large scale, oil painted canvases.

‘FOUR THIRTY A.M.’ showcases classical deities from the ancient world and is a re-working of sculpture from that same era and the Baroque. Painted in glazed oil, over detailed underdrawings, these works represent immutability and the infinite, cast in human form. Presented in a style of classical realism these deities showcase form and detail, concentrating on composition and nuance.

The deities are a representation of an aesthetic and an idea, the focus of which are still very reverberant in contemporary society. Christian remarks that “I am attempting to portray the idea of something beyond time, the very essence of which reverberates in our recognition of human form and a connection to the infinite”. The works catalyse our perceptions of what mortality means and open a reflective window to the perpetual.

The title itself represents a regular painting time that was undertaken in the production of these works. For most OU students, study inevitably means some form of sacrifice, and for the artist this was the unrelenting time spent in front of his easel at 4:30am before work each day for a year.

This exhibition marks the end of a long journey for the artist who has previously exhibited in Buckinghamshire and Lincolnshire and, whilst working full time, has been studying with the Open College of the Arts (now part of the Open University) for the last 10 years.

‘FOUR THIRTY A.M.’ is kindly hosted by the Team of Truro Arts Company, 26 River Street, Truro, TR1 2SJ. Prints of the works will also be on display at Truro Library, Union Place form 22nd April to 10th May 2024, by kind permission of the Library Team.
