BOOM Theatre presents CATS: A Cornish Reimagining

Please note this performance takes place at Truro School.

An amateur youth group production by arrangement with LW Entertainment Ltd

The Jellicle Ball… like you’ve never seen it before…

Forget the urban junkyard,  this summer the Jellicle Moon will be rising over the rugged coastline of Cornwall. Here’s your invitation to join BOOM Theatre for an extraordinary reimagining of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s award winning musical sensation, CATS.  The original version of CATS is based on the 1939 poetry collection Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot. The musical tells the story of a tribe of CATS called the “Jellicles” and the night they make the “Jellicle choice” by deciding which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life.  This version by BOOM Theatre is unlike any other you will have seen – a non replica version which brings the story of CATS re-imagined to Cornwall.

Come and meet the Cats of the Cornish landscape: from the village cats, like Jennyanydots ; to the folklore cats, such as Old Deuteronomy; to those cats like Macavity and Rumpleteazer who inhabit the shores as wreckers and pirates – all gathering together for the Jellicle Ball. This production breathes new life into T.S. Eliot’s beloved characters, rooted in the salt, soil, and soul of our county of Cornwall.

Featuring the iconic hit Memory and breathtaking choreography for Jellicle Cats, this production blends the high-octane energy of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s score with a uniquely Cornish heart.

This production also showcases the youth talent of Cornwall, experienced performers, who have performed on all the major stages in Cornwall. Many will be leaving for the UK’s top-tier performing arts conservatories this autumn. This is an opportunity to see these incredible performers on home soil before they take the next steps in their careers with their sights firmly set on the West End.

As well as appearing in notable productions throughout Cornwall including the HfC, the Regal Theatre and the Minack Theatre, these young artists have showcased Cornish excellence on the national stage, performing at Sadler’s Wells, the MOVE IT dance convention, and various national dance competitions with their dance schools.

Orchestrations by David Cullen & Andrew Lloyd Webber

Original production by Cameron Mackintosh Ltd. and The Really Useful Group Ltd

“Prologue – Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats” additional material written by Trevor Nunn and Richard Stilgoe, ”Memory” additional material written by Trevor Nunn.
