Event information:
Philleigh Folk is delighted to welcome this wonderful singer- songwriter to play in our village church in Veryan. It will be a beautiful setting for this spellbinding artist to play a collection of her music.
Her writing and most notably her guitar playing stems from a time when the steel-stringed instrument was truly finding its feet. Artists like Joni Mitchell, Judi Sill, Julie Byrne and perhaps most evidently Michael Chapman, weave into her sound. Katie absorbs these influences into her song writing and with her distinctive deep vibrato voice and crystal-clear guitar style, she makes the music inimitably her own.
Raised in East Yorkshire on the fringes of Hull, Katie Spencer’s landscape has always been that of open skies and widening rivers. It is this sense of space and movement that flows through her assured guitar style and songs. Katie stepped into a new era with her third album, What is Love, released in October 2025. An intimate collection of songs, her focus turning to those inner spaces, inviting the listener to engage with the heartfelt songs. The musicianship throughout the record feels liberated by Katie’s innovation and confidence, and the result is a master-class of inspired and beautiful-sounding craftmanship.
“Katie’s guitar playing has echoes of my dear friend the late great Bert Jansch” – Ralph McTell.
“Her articulate picking, with suggestions of folk and jazz, frames intelligently written songs” – Guitarist Magazine.
“One of the most distinctive voices in folk music” – Folk london
Katie has toured extensively and is a powerful and confident presence on stage, delivering her finely-tuned music with humour and insight. Her impressive live touring has seen her headline some of the most prestigious venues in the UK and Europe. Her many overseas adventures include Australia and Canada, she was invited to represent Britain at the prestigious Folk Alliance in Montreal. She recently became the owner and endorsee of a custom-built guitar, signature guitar specially crafted for her by distinguished luthier Tom Sands. Katie now enjoys playing this beautiful instrument within her performances.
