Philleigh Folk Club Presents Richard Trethewey
A Valentines treat with a great Cornishman and songwriter, born in the Clay Country.
Richard Trethewey is a singer, fiddle & cittern player giving his distinct take on Cornish music, giving Cornwall a truly authentic voice. Passionate about unearthing near-forgotten gems of Cornish history, Richard breathes life and emotion into which might otherwise be overlooked.
Richard completed a folk music degree in Newcastle, released his debut album ‘Dig Where You Stand’ in 2012 and has been involved in many line-ups and project since. He has performed in and recorded with the Rowan Tree, Didjan, the Grenaways, Brother Sea. With Harbottle and Jonas, Jim Causley, Leski and crown as well as with Cousin Jack’s theatre, performing The Mousehole Cat yearly in Mousehole. Toured in the USA and London and also qualified as a music therapist.
As a member of the Rowan Tree, the band delivered arguably the most ambitious Cornish diaspora project undertaking to date. A year-long project ‘Kolar’s Gold’, an album which had them collaborating with Indian musicians, which told the stories of the Cornish who emigrated and started new lives working the Gold fields of Southern India.
Made a Bard of the Cornish Gorsedh in 2020, taking the name ‘Kaner Drollys’, Singer of Songs, he has moulded a new sound for Cornish music.
